How to draw a Water Flame Candle

In this tutorial, i’ll show you have you can create a water flame candle. This artwork was not created in Photoshop, it was created in Corel Painter IX. If you only have Photoshop, you can still follow the same procedures.

NOTE: The original artwork has been created by Art Director: Marcelo Fedrizzi and photographed/retouched by Platinum FMD.

You will first have to create a new file with the following information:

Create New file

Now after you have created your file, choose a big brush size and create a circular shape with the color # 5a7288 and with smudge strenght of 50%, smudge the edges of the circular shape as follows:

Picture 1

After you have created the circular glow, now start drawing the base of the candle. Choose a dark blue color and start creating a just a simple outline that will highlight the base of your candle as shown below:

Picture 2

Now, after you have done so, start applying various shades of the base of the candle. I have mainly used six colors that all make up the base of the candle.

Picture 3

After applying the main colors now start blending them all together with the smudge tool. It is really important to carefully focus on where the six colors meet one another. Don’t forget that your candle outline is darker so its important to blend it in inside with the other colors. This will help give an effect of depth. Realize, that i have applied white shades to give a shine to the wax making it look as if it is melting. Only place very minimal white at the part where you want to show the wax is melting. This will make your candle look very real.

Picture 4

Now is the part where you are going to outline the flame itself. Again i made it with the same color i used for the base of the candle. Remember this is only an outline, we are not concerned with details yet.

Picture 5

In the same way we applied the six colors in the base of the candle, now we are going to apply various shades in the flame itself starting from the base upwards.

Picture 6

When applying the shades, don’t be afraid to use black. Black will give you an effect of depth and will create a magical contrast with the other blue shades that will make your candle truly water.

Picture 7

In the center of the flame there is the string (that supposedly lights up the whole flame. Don’t forget about it). You can emphasis this string by making the center with a shaded same color dark blue.

Picture 8

Continue applying the various shades and continue smudging. To give the flame a more realistic effect, color the top right corner with black. That way the flame will have much more depth and contrast to it.

Picture 9

The top of the flame should appear weightless. To do that effect, apply now a much stronger contrast of black and white together, with very minimal blue. That way the water will show that there are more bubbles to it that are trying to burst upwards. This is how you are going to create the bubbles at the very top.

Picture 10

For every big bubble, there is always more smaller water droplets falling from under it. To give that effect, create dotted white strokes under the big bubbles and blend them together. This will give an effect that the water is trying to rise upwards.

This is what your end product should look like. Hope you guys found that helpful and please don’t forget to comment below. Thank you.

Incredible piece and a very informative tutorial.

At first glance I thought this was a 3D render. I’m far more impressed that you hand painted it. Good job!
